Interests: fiction writing,literary criticism and urdu journalism About Me: An Introduction of Syed Ahmad Quadri by: ABDUL QADIR (Times of India) Through sheer imagination, consistent hard work and appetite for experimentation, Dr. Syed Ahmad Quadri has earned a place for himself in the field of fiction writing, criticism and journalism. A genius of enviable maturity and vision, Quadri has occupied the centre stage of Indian literature for the last so many years. Recipient of the prestigious govt of India fellowship in the year 1992, Quadri also bagged the KK Birla fellowship, three years later in the year 1995. Quadri has the distinction of perhaps being the first Urdu journalist to get the coveted fellowship. In recognition of his contribution to the literary scene of the country in general and Bihar in particular, leading English daily The Times of India included Dr Quadri in the list of Bihari achievers. The American Biographical Institute declared him as ‘Man of the year 1998. The eminent fiction writer has several books to his credit and these books include “REZA REZA KHWAB (1985), DHOOP KI CHADAR (1995) and PANI PAR NISHAN (2006), all these books being the collection of short stories. In the field of criticism, the noted critic made valuable contribution by penning and compiling books like “FUN AUR FUNKAR” (1986), AFKAR-E-NAU (1996), “SHAIR AUR SHAIREE” (2007), “AFSANA NIGAR AUR AFSANE” (2008). The synthesis of original writing and critical appreciation of other literary works makes Dr Quadri, the two in one litterateur, thereby adding to his stature in the galaxy of literary stalwarts. Dr Quadri’s research paper titled “URDU SAHAFAT BIHAR MEIN” (2003) remains the main source of reference in the field of journalism in the state. On the request cum suggestion of contemporary litterateurs of the distinguished brand, Dr Syed Ahmad Quadri has come out with a collection of sketches and interviews of renowned men and women dotting the Urdu world. On account of my natural literary instincts and as acknowledgement of Dr Quadri’s contribution I volunteered my services for the new project. My long association with Dr Quadri dating back to the nineties when I had the privilege of working as foundation assistant during the Birla foundation days prompted me to assist Dr Quadri, my mentor in more than one sense, in doing the ground work for this publication. I do hope and pray that the present book is appreciatively lapped up by urduwallahs, quite a few of whom have developed some kind of fan feeling for Dr. Quadri, the writer as well as the person. The present work gives an overall idea of the writing skill, presentation, story treatment and narrative talent of the much acclaimed writer. The present work also scripts a departure from the old tradition of saying only nice things about those who no longer live on this planet without objective engagement in a realistic and non partisan appreciation of men of letters and their writings. Khuda jab husn deta hai, nazakat a hi jati hai, goes the saying but Dr. Quadri has proved the adage wrong as unlike many other lesser mortals, throwing tantrums does not come easily to Dr Quadri. And Dr Quadri’s literary journey goes on. Inshallah we shall meet again at the next milestone of the long journey ahead.
